Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka

Wow, Sri Lanka...  Country of endless spots!

This country, still not known enough, overflows with resources, and not only for kitesurfing...

Incredible sceneries, a rich and different culture, happy people...

But let's go back to kitesurfing : North-East of Sri Lanka, where Kalpitiya is located, is bursting with spots : It is just one huge lagoon, scattered with plenty of small islands, sandbanks, desert islands... it is separated from the sea by a huge sandbank, where other little lagoons appear and where the waves break...

And all this swept by a never falling wind from June to September !

The Spot

The spot ? Not one but hundreds ! there are countless and countless spots!

To the West, the Indian Ocean. To the East, the huge lagoon of Puttalam. Between the two : you enjoy the incredible configuration of the region!

Downwinders along the coast, in the lagoon, between the islands and the reefs, in incredible sceneries and conditions : wonderful islands, waves, lagoons... You can ride every day on different spots, all of them just as good one after another !

From your lodging, you can walk to two spots : the Indian Ocean and the Puttalam lagoon. The Ocean offers some nice little waves and a neverending playground ! The lagoon offers a flat spot, huge and beautiful !It is also very easy to go on one of the numerous islands in the middle of the lagoon, where the wind goes in continuously, or to ride downwind to the "dream spot", a sand bank 50 meters wide and several kilometers long between the lagoon and the ocean, which creates a neverending offshore spot ; or to the Kappalady lagoon, the freestylers' heaven, smaller, but perfect !

The Wind

From Mid May till end of September, the wind blows continuously ! The wind stats reflect it : just like Brazil, we are really close to 100 %. The wind varies between 15 and 30 knots, according to the spot.

These are trade winds, thus perfectly regular. On most of the spots, it arrives uninterrupted from the Indian Ocean, and thus perfectly stable. Along with the quality of the spots, the wind is the big advantage of Sri Lanka.  It rises in May, becomes regular between mid May and end of May, and only stops slowly as of end of September : between mid May and September, it blows uninterrupted.

Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya is a small town at the very beginning of the separation between the Indian Ocean and the Puttalam lagoon.

Its economy is based on fishing and agriculture, very few touristic attrations are available there. You will be based about one hour from this town, directly on the sandbank, surrounded by small villages. Being very little used to tourists, Sri Lankan people will welcome you with open arms !

Colombo, the capital, is only two and a half hours away, and from there it is very easy to visit all of Sri Lanka's marvels !

Your Hotel

Built directly on the beach, SriLankaKite KiteCamp is a small piece of heaven...more than just a hotel, it's a real "surfcamp"!

The bungalows are brand new. Big, comfortable, and clean, you'll have a perfect view of the Indian Ocean from your bed... The food is fresh, clean, and delicicious !
